Kim Schulz, FOUNDER & Executive Director

Kim is the executive director of Steamboat Reading and provides instruction in reading, writing, and math, as well as instructional assessments.

Kim has a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Literacy. She is trained in Orton-Gillingham and Framing Your Thoughts. Since 1995, she has experience teaching preschool through 8th grade in a variety of school settings. In 2014, Kim founded Key to Learning, a private tutoring business providing intensive one-on-one support in reading and writing. In 2017, Key to Learning evolved into Steamboat Reading, which transitioned to a nonprofit organization in 2019 to better support the needs of students and families in Northwest Colorado.

Alyssa Laliberte, Program Director

Alyssa provides learning evaluations and advocacy support.

She received a Master’s in Education with an emphasis on Literacy Intervention from Colorado College. She is a Certified Academic Language Therapist and Take Flight Therapist. Her major areas of focus include dyslexia therapy, special education advocacy, and literacy intervention. Alyssa started her teaching career in 2010. She has experience teaching 3rd through 12th grade in every content area and as an elementary special education teacher.

Hadley nylen, Learning Specialist

Hadley provides instruction in reading, writing, and math.

She has a Master’s in Elementary Education and a special education endorsement. She has been trained in Orton-Gillingham and SMILA. Hadley started her teaching career in 2005 and has experience teaching kindergarten through 5th grade as a classroom teacher, interventionist, and special education teacher.

 
 
 
 

Rebecca McNamara

Rebecca provides instruction in reading, writing, and math.

She has a Master's in Reading with an Emphasis on Elementary Education and also a Master's in Instruction and Curriculum. In addition, she has a Reading Teacher Endorsement for grades K-12. She has been trained in Orton-Gillingham, SMILA, and Wilson. She currently teaches for Steamboat Springs School District and has been the Interventionist providing specialized learning support at Sleeping Giant School since 2021. 

 
 

Corie Sherman

Corie provides instruction in reading.

Corie has a Master of Elementary Education with an endorsement in English as a Second Language from Florida Atlantic University. She is trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach and has been teaching using that approach since 2018. She has been teaching elementary school since 2003 and is currently a second-grade teacher at Hayden Valley Elementary School.

 
 

Abby Chan

Abby provides instruction in math and reading.

Abby has an Elementary Education degree from Wheaton College. She has been teaching students in preschool through fourth grade since 2015. She specializes in math and behavioral interventions. She is trained in Orton-Gillingham and has been teaching students using that approach since 2019.

 
 
 

Anita Handing

Anita provides comprehensive educational and literacy evaluation services.

She received her Master of Arts degree in Educational Psychology with certification in Special Education from Montclair State University in New Jersey. While working on a Ph.D. in educational psychology at the University of Colorado Boulder, she obtained her Colorado School Psychology Certification and Special Services License K-12 from the state of Colorado. She has training in the Orton-Gillingham approach, Linda Mood-Bell’s Seeing Stars and Visualizing and Verbalizing programs, and Language! She has been a special education teacher and learning differences interventionist and has a combined 32 years of teaching experience. She currently maintains a private psychology practice in Steamboat Springs.

 

Julie Tourigny, OTD, OTR 

Julie provides fine motor (handwriting) assessments.

She was awarded her doctorate by Boston University in 2013. Previously, she graduated from Boston University with a BS in occupational therapy. She has dedicated her educational and professional careers to developing cutting-edge strategies and programs that promote the vital sensory, motor, and social skills young children need for success in school.

 

Carolee Jackson

Carolee provides educational advocacy services. 

She received a Master's in Educational Policy and Leadership from DU in 2014 and has served for more than 10 years as a K-12 teacher and administrator. She has experience managing special education teams, ensuring quality programming and services for children with learning differences.

Carolee extended her passion for advocating for children by founding an educational advocacy and consulting firm where she focuses on creating real results for families through effective collaboration with schools and ensuring access to appropriate learning opportunities for all children. Her unique advocacy services include specialized consultation and support in the areas of special education, speech & language, school psychology, and mental health through partnerships with experts.

She is a member of the Council of Parent Advocates and Attorneys (COPAA) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Her advocacy firm, Colorado Partners in Learning, LLC, works in collaboration with Steamboat Reading to help students find academic success.
