Advocacy

Let us advocate for you and your child.

How can our advocate help you?

  • Steamboat Reading’s advocate partners with you to ensure that your child is meeting her potential.

  • We listen to your concerns, questions, and goals for your child and put this into a common language and structure that school teams can easily interpret and implement.

  • We ensure that you know your rights as a parent through the IEP or 504 process.

  • We work to build strong, respectful relationships between you and your child's teachers, so your child can reap the rewards of a village, truly working together on his behalf.

What does support from our advocate look like?

  • Initial meeting to learn more about your child and review the current plan (if applicable) and other educational history

  • Assist with school correspondence and problem-solving (emails, meetings, formal IEP/504 evaluation requests)

  • Help you prepare for IEP/504 or other school meetings

  • Join you at meetings to provide support

  • Post-meeting debrief to ensure that you are satisfied with the outcome

  • Provide you with access to consultants with expertise in the following areas:

    • Preschool through 12th-grade academics and special education

    • School psychology (social-emotional/behavior, evaluations)

    • Speech-language pathology

    • Occupational therapy

    • School administration, discipline, and conflict resolution

The advocacy services at Steamboat Reading provide you with the tools, support, and information to help the team identify your child’s needs and implement services to achieve her goals.
